Permaculture principles are a great way to start thinking about how to use space to grow in, working with the land and elements and  integrating what you create so one thing feeds another. Permaculture is just a set of practical ideas that uses observation and long learned gardening/farming techniques to minimise cost, effort and waste. Here is an example overview.
